What is colocation and why might you need it?
Colocation means one simple thing: your server is hosted in a professional data center instead of under your desk, in the basement, or in the server closet at your office. You remain the owner of the hardware, while the data center provides power, cooling, Internet connectivity, and physical security, 24/7, 365 days a year. If you are a small business, freelancer, enthusiast, or simply have a server that needs to run continuously — colocation is the right solution for you.
Rack Servers and Tower Servers. What’s the difference?
In professional data centers, equipment is typically installed in standardized 19-inch racks. The unit of height in these racks is called a "U" (unit) — about 4.5 cm.
- Rack-mounted servers are designed specifically for these racks — flat, compact, and slide in like drawers. A typical rack server takes up 1U or 2U.
- Tower servers look like standard desktop computers — taller, bulkier, and not designed for rack mounting.
The main difference is in the form factor, and in the data center, the form factor determines the price.
Why is paying for “5U in a rack” not a good deal for you?
If you have a Tower server and place it in a standard rack, it will occupy between 4U and 10U (sometimes even more) — simply because it's not designed to be compact. Moreover, a rack has 42U of usable space. A Tower server, "lying" on a shelf, might take up 5–8U, without actually requiring that much power or connectivity.
In short: you pay rack prices for a non-rack device. It's the most expensive way to host the least amount of equipment.
