Business owners of small and medium-sized companies often believe that colocation is only for the big players—banks, corporations, and large-scale projects. Data centers are traditionally associated with massive IT infrastructure, extensive budgets, and specialized teams.
The reality, however, is quite different. In fact, small and medium-sized enterprises are the exact profile of businesses for which server colocation brings multiple advantages. These are often companies with critical data, limited IT resources, and a real need for reliability that an on-premises server room cannot deliver.
We're sharing some of the most widespread myths about colocation for small and medium enterprises, and what such a solution could look like for a business of your scale.
Myth #1: Colocation is expensive and we can’t afford it
This is the most common misconception, but also the easiest to disprove if the business is able to do an accurate calculation.
The server in the office seems like a cheap solution because the costs are dispersed and invisible.
But they exist in the form of:
- the electricity consumed by the equipment 24/7;
- the air conditioning for the room it occupies;
- physical security and access control;
- periodic maintenance and component replacement.
And beyond all this—the cost of downtime. How much does an hour without access to your systems cost your business? Or worse—a full business day?
With data center colocation, you pay for electricity and internet connectivity (costs you already have) and a fee for the physical space your equipment occupies. In return, you get an infrastructure you couldn’t build yourself for the same price: redundant power, professional cooling, physical security, and guaranteed uptime.
When you make an honest comparison of actual total costs, colocation rarely turns out to be the more expensive alternative. In many cases, it is the cheaper option, with greater cost predictability and much higher reliability.

Myth #2: Colocation isn’t for us because we don’t have enough equipment for a whole rack
Many business owners imagine colocation as renting a huge rack filled with dozens of servers. If you have only one or two servers, this seems like an excessive solution that doesn’t fit your business scale.
Modern data centers offer much more flexible options. You can rent only a section of a shared rack, enough for one or two servers, at a price that matches your project’s scale. If your business grows, you can add capacity. If you need more security and independence, you can upgrade to a private rack, accessible only by you.
And, if you have a tower server, which is often used by small businesses, you can also benefit from tower colocation, designed specifically for this type of equipment.
Myth #3: You need a specialized IT team to manage colocation
The opposite is true. Companies without their own IT department, or with a small IT team, stand to gain the most from colocating server equipment in a data center.
The office server requires someone to take care of it, respond in emergencies, monitor the room temperature, replace hardware, and manage processes. If this responsibility falls to one person, the risk to your business is too high.
In the data center, this burden is assumed by a professional team. Specialists onsite can carry out specific physical tasks for you (installing equipment, rebooting a server, changing a cable, checking indicators) without an employee having to travel to the data center. This saves time, transportation costs, and stress during emergencies.
Additionally, a data center significantly reduces your dependence on a single IT specialist or a small team holding all the infrastructure knowledge, so your company isn’t left vulnerable during their absence.

Myth #4: Cloud services are always more cost-effective and easier to manage
Another common misconception is that cloud services are always the better choice compared to colocation in a data center. Here are some examples to the contrary:
- Cost predictability: With cloud services you pay based on usage, and the amount can vary significantly. With colocation, your monthly cost is fixed and predictable. For budget-constrained businesses, this makes a big difference in financial planning.
- Control over data: With colocation, the equipment is yours, the data sits on your hardware, and you fully control access to it. In the cloud, your data is stored on someone else's infrastructure, in data centers you may not even know the location of. For companies subject to strict regulatory requirements (finance, healthcare, legal services, and many subject to NIS-2) this is a crucial factor.
AbsCloud reminder: The two solutions are not mutually exclusive and offer multiple benefits for any business. Many companies use a hybrid model—critical data and systems on their own server in a data center, and flexible or seasonal workloads in the cloud.

When is data center colocation most suitable for small and medium businesses?
Here are recurring scenarios for small and medium-sized companies for which colocation in a professional data center is the optimal technological and business solution. Ask yourself: would you really avoid such a service if:
- you rely on an ERP, CRM, or accounting system that your staff must have access to at all times, where interruptions directly lead to losses;
- you have an online store or website for which even minimal downtime means business unavailability and lost opportunities (sales, orders, bookings, etc.);
- you work in a strictly regulated industry (finance, healthcare, legal, public sector, etc.) requiring you to meet data security and location requirements;
- you have remote teams that need reliable connectivity to centralized systems;
- you manage data whose loss would be critical for your business.
And another myth: It’s hard to get started with such a service
Not if the process is similar to that of AbsCloud Data Center (AC☁DC). Our process includes:
- Consultation with our IT experts to select the right service and parameters;
- Onsite visit to the data center so you can be assured your equipment will operate in optimal conditions;
- Contract with no long-term commitment;
- Ability to send equipment via courier;
- Installation by our or your specialist.
You have at your disposal a loading dock, freight elevator, and a room for preparing your equipment before installation. If you need something specific, like a mounting accessory, you can use our onsite 3D printer.
