Server in the office or in the data center?

At first glance, a local server seems like a more affordable and convenient option, especially for smaller and medium-sized businesses. However, here’s what they often miss or risk:

You must ensure electricity and cooling

Servers run 24/7 and consume a significant amount of energy. Add to that the need for constant cooling, and the results can add up to hundreds of leva per month.

In data centers this issue is anticipated: server rooms are built with specialized energy efficiency and thermal control systems. 

You must ensure stable and reliable Internet connection

The standard Internet connection you use in your office does not provide the level of stability and availability that a TIER III-class data center, for example, can provide. Ask yourself how much each minute of downtime would cost your business, and what is the risk of data loss, access issues, or missed business opportunities. 

Note that data centers offer over 99% uptime, redundant connections, lower latency, and higher security, which are hard to guarantee at a better price with a local server. 

You need to consider physical security

You probably have personal and sensitive business data on your servers that you cannot afford to lose under any circumstances. This means your server rooms must be protected from unauthorized access, located in secure racks and cages, and equipped with the necessary fire detection and suppression systems that data centers have. 

Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS)

Sooner or later, a power outage may affect your office location. If your server is there, the risk of it stopping, losing valuable information and databases, or ending up with damaged hardware is unreasonably high. 

To avoid such consequences, data centers use UPS systems with dual redundancy and additional generators, providing uninterrupted power supply in case of interruptions and failures.

Server equipment maintenance and response time

Do you have the resources to maintain your servers and how much does that cost you monthly? How quickly can your specialists intervene if immediate action is needed? Most often, such questions arise at the most inconvenient moment—outside working hours or on a holiday. 

If you use a data center for colocation, this question also won’t be a problem for your business, as you will rely on an onsite team of specialists who can keep your equipment in working order and intervene immediately if necessary.
