When a business decides that the office server is no longer a reliable enough solution, there are two logical options: colocation of your own equipment in a data center or renting a server from a provider. Both options can solve the problem with the physical environment, where the equipment will have reserved power, cooling, and connectivity with controlled access.
Which option you choose depends on your business profile, planning horizon, and your priorities regarding control, costs, and flexibility. In this article, we also share the recommendations of the AbsCloud team on the topic.
What does colocation mean?
With colocation, the equipment is entirely yours. You purchase, configure, and manage it. The data center provides the physical space in a rack cabinet, power supply, cooling, connectivity, physical security, and other additional advantages. The maintenance of the server and all system-related issues remain your responsibility.
Why is it a suitable option for your business?
- You have full control over the hardware: With colocation, you independently choose every component – CPU, memory, drives, network cards, etc. of your own server. You can optimize the hardware for a specific workload according to your business needs and make adjustments at any time.
- Cost-effectiveness in the long run: After paying off the initial investment in your own server, the costs for colocation (rent for space, power, connectivity) are significantly lower than monthly fees for a rented server. For companies with predictable and constant workloads, the savings over several years can be substantial.
- Independence from provider: With colocation, you are not tied to a specific hardware provider. If you decide to change your data center, the move is simply a logistical matter. With a rented server, your data is on hardware owned by a third party, and the process of switching is more complicated and time-consuming.
- Data Sovereignty: The disks and data are entirely your property. With a rented server, whose hardware belongs to the provider, physical destruction of the disks upon decommissioning requires special procedures and, in some cases, is impossible. With colocation, these components and data are always under your control since you rely on your own equipment.
Please note that with server colocation in a data center, you are responsible for your own equipment. Nevertheless, if you rely on a high-class data center that offers Remote Hands & Eyes services and additional extras for servicing and maintenance (cargo ramp, 3D printer, special room, etc.), maintaining your servers would require minimal time and resource investment from your team.
What is a rented server?
Renting a server (dedicated server) means that the equipment is owned by the provider, and you pay a specified fee for the right to use it. Depending on the particular service, the provider may maintain the operating system and hardware, intervening if necessary. However, this also means that the provider has access to your equipment.
With this model, you do not invest in your own equipment and are not required to maintain it over time. It is suitable to use if you plan for a short-term need for additional server resources, limited in time, and require a quick solution. As already mentioned, it is important to ensure that the provider's terms, response time, scalability options, and transparent data policies meet your business needs and that you are not in a situation of vendor lock-in – being too dependent on a specific service provider.
