How aviation and IT infrastructure management are alike


Aviation is among the most thoroughly audited and documented industries in history when it comes to safety. There are extremely strict procedures in place to either prevent every incident or to analyze, document, and turn it into a procedure, checklist, or systematic change. The result is objective data and statistics proving that aviation provides the safest and most secure means of transportation. 

So why are we discussing aviation on our data center blog? Precisely because IT infrastructure management has much in common with this industry: small mistakes can have disproportionately large consequences, response time is critical, and the human factor remains a central risk. 

Take a look at some of the similarities that over time have led to sustainable approaches in both industries:

Another check is not a sign of uncertainty or incompetence

Pilots use a checklist before every flight. The reason is not that they don't know the procedures or how the plane works, but that they know how easy it is to skip a step during a routine operation. The human brain often automatically skips those small tasks and details that are repeated dozens or hundreds of times in daily life. 

What IT work should adopt: Routine operations like deploying a new configuration, replacing a component, or planned maintenance often happen by memory or experience of the technician. And very often, if the process doesn't go to plan, it turns out a step or detail was missed—a step everyone knew about and could have avoided.

What happens in a certified data center: Documented procedures and checklists are a mandatory element, audited according to ISO/IEC 27001 and ISO 20000-1 standards. Auditors verify not only the existence of procedures, but also that they are followed, closely resembling best practices in aviation. 

Redundancy is not seen as an “extra” expense

Duplication of various systems and components (hydraulic systems, electrical circuits, second pilot or engine) in aviation is not considered an extra investment or burden on costs. The industry does not even calculate the probabilities of failure or issues with any of these; it directly anticipates what would happen in such a scenario already at the design level. 

Here, too, the similarities are obvious: Often, businesses try to estimate the probability of a power outage, network equipment failure, or a natural disaster. But the more important question is actually how it will impact the business and how much such an incident would cost your business if you haven't provided redundancy for a system or component. 

What is the approach in a high-class data center: Independent power supplies, UPS systems, and diesel generators are in place not because power is expected to fail often, but because the consequences of server interruption and downtime are unacceptable for clients—whenever and for however long they may occur. 

Human error

Who is to blame?” or “Why did the procedure allow this to happen?” – which is the more important question for you? In aviation, incidents have long not been treated as individual pilot or technician mistakes, but rather as failures or gaps in procedures, design, or organizational culture.   

In companies whose core business is outside IT, an IT incident often triggers a search for the specific culprit for service outages. A much more meaningful reaction would be to act as is done in aviation incidents.

In professional data centers and IT infrastructure management, the same incident management logic applies. Every problem triggers corrective action at the process level—far beyond the individual responsibility of each team member. 

Emergency procedures are rehearsed in advance 

You probably know that almost every emergency scenario in aviation is anything but unfamiliar to crews and responsible staff. Accidents, equipment failures, unauthorized external interference, and much more are among the scenarios pre-practiced by the team. When the unwanted event occurs, everyone knows their role and is well prepared to respond in a precisely defined way. 

In IT, Disaster Recovery plans exist in many organizations, but are rarely tested. The plan describes what needs to be done in an emergency, but only testing shows if it really works in practice. The difference is key: many DR plans contain steps that lack automation, access, or up-to-date documentation.

Testing the DR plan is the "aviation simulator" for IT infrastructure. It shouldn’t happen only once at implementation, but periodically—systems change, people leave, and the plan loses effectiveness over time.

Documenting every step is not an administrative burden

In aviation, every step is documented: technical checks, repairs, flights, and any deviation from standard procedure. This documentation is not an administrative burden; it serves as an archive, allowing engineers and investigators to understand the machine’s history and spot patterns invisible without records.

In IT, documentation is a systematically underestimated activity. Network configurations and maintenance procedures may be known to the current administrator. But if that person is unavailable, the value of good documentation becomes immeasurable—and its absence painfully obvious.

Compromise when something “still works”

In many situations you may decide that something works "well enough" or is "safe enough"—but not in aviation. If it does not meet a set standard and requirement, there is no compromise even in the absence of an alternative. 

In IT, situations often occur where a process, product, or infrastructure hasn’t been tested, is out of warranty, or the documentation is outdated.

International ISO standards and the TIER classification provide measurable values and levels below which no compromise is made and “good enough” is not regarded as a positive evaluation of network or equipment performance.  

What other zero-error-tolerance industries adopt

Aviation, and many other industries, have reached their current level of security and safety not so much due to technological breakthroughs but through systematic learning from every mistake and converting it into a procedure. Standards, certificates, and documented procedures are the mechanisms through which the sector formalizes learned lessons. Organizations that choose to work with providers who adhere to these principles do so not because they are obliged, but because they understand the cost of the alternative.
